Chooks News 16 May 2025

Kia ora Tukapa Whānau,

Week 8 is here, and this week we want to take a moment to give a huge thanks to all our amazing sponsors. Without your continued support, we simply wouldn’t be the club we are today. Many of our sponsors have been part of the Tukapa family for years—some as players, managers, or through their children—and it's the positive experiences they’ve had that inspire them to give back to the club.

As I write this from the clubrooms, Dave from NZ Sparky is here helping install new speaker wiring, and soon Mark from PSL will be around to connect everything up. This is what sponsorship looks like. It’s not always cash in hand—it’s the generous contributions of time, expertise, and resources that help us stand out. Yes, money helps keep the lights on, but it’s the sense of community, inclusiveness, and pride that truly makes Tukapa special.

Last night, sitting around with the Toa, Senior 3rds, and Prems, a common theme came through: for many of us, it’s not just about the game on Saturday—it’s about the friendships, the stories, the laughs, the Thursday night trainings, and the post-match banter. That’s what "One Club" really means.

Take a moment to think—how many other sports clubs are open five days a week for both young men and women to connect, laugh, and build lifelong memories? What we’ve created here at Tukapa is something truly unique, and it’s thanks to our sponsors that it’s here to stay.

So to all our sponsors: thank you. We look forward to seeing you this Saturday in the Ford Tent at the end of the field.

This Saturday, our Premiers, Div 1 (Senior B’s), and Colts face Coastal at home. The first-round matchups were all close, so we’re in for some exciting rugby. Meanwhile, our Div 2 (Senior 3rds) are off to Toko—a great club with a great vibe. I joined the trip last year and can confirm it’s a fun one, both on and off the field.

Our Toa team has a bye this week but will be at the club for a 12 pm training session.

After the final whistle blows on Saturday, stick around for the big Netball & Rugby Party! The theme is Vegas, and we’ll have a mechanical bull, fancy dress, and a DJ spinning tunes into the night. It’s a celebration of our One Club spirit, so come along and enjoy the fun.

A big shout-out to our loyal supporters—we’ll see you on Saturday as we cheer on 12 junior games in the morning, followed by three senior grade matches in the afternoon.

We are Tukapa. We are one club.

Chooks News 9 May 2025

We're into Week 7, and our teams are scattered from a hole to breakfast—but as always, we’re working hard to get five teams on the paddock this weekend. Huge thanks to some of our ex-Premiers players stepping in to help us out again—legends like Beast and Chambo jumping back in really shows what this club means to all of us.

This is the final week of Round One. After this weekend, all competition points will be halved—except for the Premier Women’s team.

It was awesome seeing so many old-timers at Tukapa last weekend! The Monday morning chiller was looking a bit light thanks to a solid turnout. A reminder that the bar is open:

  • Fridays from 3:30 – 6:30pm
  • Saturdays from 2:30 – 6:30pm (or later!)

This Saturday’s Premier game will be live-streamed on the big screen—come down and cheer the boys on.

  • Colts to Okaiawa – Departing 9:45am
  • Senior 3rds to Hāwera – Departing 11:00am
  • Toa to Okaiawa – Departing 12:30pm

Next weekend is a huge one at the club—Sponsors Day followed by the world-famous Tukapa Netball Party.

Make sure you get that late pass sorted!

In 2001, Tukapa made history with three championship-winning teams: Senior A’s, Senior 3rds, and Colts. We’re marking 25 years since that incredible season with a special reunion:

  • King’s Birthday Weekend – Saturday 30 May 2026
  • Tukapa Clubrooms

Tentative Schedule:

Friday 29 May (from 4:00pm):

  • Clubrooms open – catch-ups, drinks, and meals

Saturday 30 May:

  • 12:00pm: Pre-game function upstairs (light lunch)
  • 1:00pm – 4:15pm: All Tukapa teams playing at home
  • 4:15pm – late: Aftermatch function
  • 6:00pm: Auction – one-off ‘Year of the Chicken’ playing jerseys worn by the Premiers that day

Let’s get the word out—especially to those living outside Taranaki—so we can pack the Chook House and relive a great year in our club’s history.

  • Senior A: Captain – Mark Grenside | Coach – Dale Atkins
  • Senior 3rds: Captain – Bruce Capper | Coach – Wayne Penn (RIP)
  • Colts: Captain – Josh Robinson | Coach – Bryan Boulton

We’d appreciate help tracking down players—if you’ve got any contact info, let us know.

For comments, questions, or if you want to help organise:

So as I finish this news letter with the rain coming down outside we hope for fine weather and running rugby tomorrow to all our players go well and wear those hoops with pride.

Chooks News 1 May 2025

After a refreshing week off out at Urenui with friends and family, I’m back into the thick of it—and what a week to come back to. This Saturday is shaping up to be one of the biggest days on the club calendar. For the first time this season, all five of our senior teams are playing at home, and that includes our Toa Women’s team, fresh off a big win. Add in Old Timers Day, and it’s safe to say we’re going all in.

With five teams playing at home, there’s a mountain of logistics involved. The Tukapa Lifestyle Building crew has been flat out this week putting in the hard mahi behind the scenes. They’ve built temporary changing rooms, installed a new door in the hallway for separate male and female access to showers and toilets, and we’ve organised portaloos to help manage the crowd and make the day run smoothly.

It’s not glamorous work, but it’s crucial. When people arrive on Saturday and everything’s running like clockwork, it’ll be because of the hours of planning and hands-on effort from the club’s volunteers. A massive thanks to everyone who’s rolled up their sleeves this week to make it happen.

This Saturday is Old Timers Day, and we want the club buzzing from morning to night. Give your old rugby mates a ring and get them down to Tukapa—it’s the perfect chance to reconnect, share a yarn or two, and enjoy a full day of community and rugby.

We’re honoured to welcome Gary Carnachan from the Taranaki Rugby Community Trust (TRCT) as our guest speaker. Gary will be speaking at 1:10pm, sharing the story of how the Trust was formed, how it’s funded, and the important work it does to support community rugby in Taranaki. Whether you’re a current player, life member, or proud supporter, this is a chance to hear how the rugby ecosystem works and how it’s evolving to meet the needs of today’s game.

And of course, karaoke kicks off from 6:30pm—so warm up the vocal cords and stay on for a great night of laughs, singing, and community spirit.

Let me pull back the curtain a bit—because every Tuesday night is a balancing act. My job is to make sure we’ve got enough numbers to field five competitive sides on Saturday. Sounds simple, but in 2025, it’s anything but.

Colts

Tuesday night, I checked in with the Colts. Only 14 lads at training, which had me a bit nervous. But the energy was great, and the group reassured me they’re good to go for Saturday. We had a new FDMC lad in the mix for his first training, and it’s clear the team’s starting to gel well. They’re building nicely.

B’s

Then I swung over to the B’s. This group is under pressure. With injuries to their own squad and the Prems needing cover, the depth is stretched thin. But the boys are determined to front up—they’re chasing a win this weekend that would help secure a spot in the top four. Both coaches are working overtime to get them ready.

Premiers

Over at the Prems, I caught up with Blowers to get the latest. Cole is away on tour for a few weeks, so Scotty’s had a big load this week, with Campbell stepping in to help the backs. Can’t give too much away before team lists are out, but we’ve got some important players back, and we’re feeling confident heading into Saturday.

3rds

The 3rds chat lit up after dinner Tuesday night—over a plate of smoked marlin from one of our loyal sponsors. This is where things get tricky. Numbers are very light for the match against Patea. Injuries, other sporting commitments, and plain old life have hit this team hard. There’s a real risk of a default here, but we’re pushing every option and won’t call it until the absolute last minute.

Toa Women

Wednesday night, I was back down at the club for TOA training. I caught up with Jas and Plims after their big first-up win. Numbers are strong, especially in the forwards, but like many teams across the country, we’re a little light on backs. Still, they’re confident and working hard for what should be a tight match against Inglewood.

I know sometimes people question why we host post-match events or spend money on functions like karaoke nights or bands. But here’s the truth—these events are what keep the culture alive. The days are gone when players did nothing else in winter but play rugby and hang out at the club. Today, there’s a lot more competing for people’s time.

If we don’t invest in our culture and give players reasons to connect, we risk losing them altogether. Without these social events, we don’t have teams. Without teams, we don’t have rugby. Without rugby, we don’t have Tukapa.

It’s as simple—and serious—as that.

To all our current players—thank you. Week after week, you show up, get stuck in, and represent this club with pride. I hope an old fella buys you a beer on Saturday, shakes your hand, and tells you he’s proud of you—because you deserve it.

To our supporters, life members, and old boys—this Saturday is for you. Come early, stay late, and enjoy the club you helped build. Let’s show the next generation what it means to be part of ONE CLUB.

WE ARE TUKAPA. WE ARE ONE CLUB.

See you all Saturday—bright and early.

This is just a brief look at a standard week at the Tukapa clubrooms. I know I’ve probably missed a few legends (sorry team), but the message is simple:
Many hands make light work – and without those hands, we wouldn’t be the club we are.
So next time you see one of the names above, give them a pat on the back and thank them for being a good bugger. Better still, if you see something that needs doing, think “I can do that.”
And to those thinking they’re too busy – we’re only asking for 10 minutes here and there to keep Tukapa strong.

Good Friday at the Chook House
What else are you gonna do on a public holiday when every other pub is shut? Grab some mates and head down to Tukapa — the fizzy’s always cold, and Paul will have meals ready to go from the kitchen.

Chooks News 11 Apr 2025

It’s Week 3 of the 2025 season, and we’re stoked to welcome everyone back to the Collective First National Tukapa Clubrooms for our first home games of the year. The weather's looking good, the beer will be cold, and the banter even better.
As I’ve said before, numbers are tight this year—but it’s great to see all four senior men’s teams fielding solid squads this weekend. That’s a huge effort, and it shows how committed everyone is.
It’s always a big day when our neighbourhood mates NPOB come to the Chook House, so get down here and enjoy some top-notch code!

Our Div 1 boys have been on the hunt for a few more players, but this group is already tight both on and off the field. Here’s what Renee had to say:
"The Tukapa Division 1 team has had a mixed start to the season, facing the challenge of low player numbers due to injuries and players moving on from last year. We’ve had two tough away games to start – but the boys showed real grit with a well-earned win in Rahotu during Round 1. Round 2 didn’t go our way against a strong Southern team, but we’re learning, building, and growing together.
We’re on the lookout for a few extra players who want to be part of a great group and play some exciting footy. Training is twice a week and the vibes are good. Come get involved!"
Up the Bzz!

Our Junior Muster last Saturday was an awesome reminder of what “One Club” really means. Watching our Year Ones charge around with pride was something special. I even heard one young fella say to his mate, “I love my rugby club.” That’s all the motivation I need to keep pushing us forward.
Our senior players love this place just as much, and that shared passion is what keeps Tukapa ticking. Sure, rugby’s about the game—but what makes this club great is the friendships that start on the field and grow off it.

Support the Club – Get Involved

Anyway, time for me to shift a few tables and get things set up for a big day tomorrow. See you at the Chook House.

Chooks News 4 Apr 2025

Hey Team,

Week 2 is here, and while I’m not sugar-coating it, we’ve faced some challenges with player numbers across all teams. However, I’ve been absolutely blown away by the dedication and effort of the management teams and senior players who’ve gone above and beyond to ensure we didn’t default on any teams last week—and we’re pushing hard to make sure Week 2 is no different. This is exactly why we say Tukapa is one club—it’s the people, working together, that make us great.

This week, our Premiers, Div 1, and Colts are heading down to Hawera to take on Southern. Southern had a strong first round with three big wins over United and Okaiawa, so we know they’ll be tough opponents. But with nearly all of our squads back to full strength, we’ll be giving them a serious run for their money. Our eyes are on the Werder Challenge Cup, awarded to the best-performing club on the day.

Our Premiers have unfortunately picked up a few injuries over the past couple of weeks:

  • Chris Jollands (broken arm) – 6-8 weeks out
  • Olive Lam Yuen (ankle injury) – 4 weeks out
  • Thomas Edwards – 3-4 weeks out
  • Josh Keech & Ethan Lobb – injury status TBD

While these injuries stretch our resources, we’ve got a strong line-up ready to battle.

Our Div 2 boys are heading out to Bell Block to face the only other local team in the division. We’re running low on numbers due to players moving overseas and others stepping up to Div 1, but we’ve had a great response from ex-players rejoining the team. Over the past week, we’ve seen 6 new players at training. If you’re keen to play—even just occasionally—let me, Greenie, or Rebo know. We need you to keep this team going strong!

Our Toa women kick off their pre-season this weekend with their first game against Okaiawa at Joll Park at 11:30 am. This team is full of energy, with around 34 active players and 20 newcomers to Tukapa. Big shoutout to our management team—Plims, Jas, and Vicky—for building such a fantastic culture. These women are all in on our vision of One Club, and I’m excited to see how far they can go this season. We’re all proud to have this team up and running, and a special thanks to Kevin Curd for encouraging me to get it started. Best of luck, ladies!

We’ve got some great news on the sponsorship front. Most of our existing sponsors are back for another year, with some even doubling their support. And we’ve got a huge announcement coming soon about a new sponsor that will have a major impact on how we see our club. Keep an eye out! If you’re looking to help out Tukapa and align your business with us, reach out to Rob Ridland for sponsorship opportunities.

I’ve got to give a massive shoutout to Jan Holdt, one of Tukapa’s biggest assets. Jan has secured over $30,000 in community grants for us already in 2025. She’s done a phenomenal job, and I can’t say enough how much her hard work means to this club. Jan, you’re a Tukapa legend!

Now, some news that won’t be as popular—due to price increases from Lion Breweries, we will have to adjust some of the prices at the bar. I know this isn’t ideal, but remember: every drink you buy at Tukapa helps support the club. Thanks for your understanding.

Don’t forget about the junior muster this Saturday at 10 am. Be sure to get your kids to the club to pay their subs and collect their jerseys. Also, if you’re looking for new Tukapa gear, our merch is now live on thelockerroom.co.nz Check it out and grab some new gear to support your club!

See you on the sidelines this weekend!

After a massive week this week, making sure we have 4 teams ready to go, I have run out of time to give you a full newsletter, but here are the starting teams and a short write up from our Colts manager Trent. Next week I'll give you a full over view of how all teams are sitting.

A new season and a new beginning for our Tukapa Motion Plumbing & Gas Colts team.

2024 finished on a high for our lads winning the competition and 2025 turns a page on that success and we get to go again.

We have lost a number of players due to age and going up the grades but have also welcomed a total of 9 players to the team and are excited to get our season started against Coastal this weekend.

We have a good blend of experience and youth across the team and are looking forward to watching the lads grow throughout the season. Coaches Jarrod Werder, Daniel Sinclair and Anthony Day have named co-captains Fletcher Smith and Harry Theodore to lead the group.

Up the Chooks Colts 2025! Lezzgo!

All junior and senior players can register through Explorer, while social members can sign up via the usual Sporty system.

All Junior players are required for Muster next Saturday 5 April 10.00am.

I look forward to seeing you all down the coast on Saturday.

As we head to Poneke for our annual Zembar Cup clash, I can't help but think of all the grey-haired buggers who’ve played in this game over the years would have a lot of stories to tell. The Zembar Cup means so much to both teams, and it's not just about the on-field competition but also the off-field fun.

This year’s tour team includes our usual front-runners, with Curly Boulton and myself making sure the drinks are kept secure at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday. Scott Fuglistaller will be leading the boys this weekend, with Blowers handling the grunt work.

As I sit here on the bus, I’m looking around at a fantastic bunch of young lads eager to get their boots on and represent our club. It’s inspiring to see their commitment, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.

The Komene cup was played last Saturday with a great showing of teams, 20 in total from all parts of our club.

Best dressed was won by the wedding party colts.

Gav cup was won by Chook peters and his cronies.

Komene Cup won by the Peter Bishop skipped team.

Get your kids registered then come along to the collective first National Junior Muster.

Next week, we’ll be releasing the full squad for all teams. Stay tuned!

This weekend, our championship-winning Colts will be playing Southern down in Hawera. If you’re looking for a good game to watch, they kick off at 1pm. It’s well worth the drive!

Starting next Thursday, we’ll be offering our Thursday meals again. If you’re at a loose end, come up, grab a meal, and enjoy a brew. It’s a great chance to catch up with the crew.

We’re cruising through Hawera right now, and the weather is still fine. Keep an eye on our Tukapa social media pages for updates, including any live stream links for this weekend’s game.

All teams are putting in the work, and I can’t wait for the season to kick off. Next week, I’ll take a closer look at each squad and hear from the coaches, so stay tuned!

Hey Tukapa Family,
What an awesome night we had on Monday, hanging out with our friends from CASI! It was such a treat to share in their rich culture. We had an unforgettable time with a paddock of cow on the spit and a river of red wine to wash it down!
Cooking alongside the experts at live-fire grilling was a fantastic experience, and now, I’ve definitely got the travel bug—I’m itching to visit their homeland and see more of what they’ve got to offer.

On the rugby front, CASI also gave us a taste of what it looks like to train four times a week for four hours a session. Talk about dedication! Despite that, our boys still managed to pull together some strong phases of play. The highlight of the day came from our Championship-winning Colts—great stuff, lads!

As always, feel free to check out more photos from the day at www.siffleet.co.nz

We’ve got a full schedule ready to roll, which we’ll release next week, but mark your calendars for Old Timers Day on Saturday, April 12th—that’s Week 3 for our Men’s team, and you won’t want to miss it!

If you’re keen to play for Tukapa, now’s your time! We’ve got a box of boots to donate, so come on down, grab a pair, and join the best club in Taranaki!

We’re kicking off Darts Night on Monday, March 17th! It’s a fun evening with a mix of darts players and rugby folks, so swing by for a fizzy or two and some laughs every Monday starting at 6.00pm.
Want to give it a go? Head over to the Tukapa Darts Facebook page on Monday to add your name to the list. We’ve got darts available for anyone eager to give it a try!

As always, we’re on the lookout for more sponsors. We’re almost at capacity, so if you know anyone keen to jump on board, please get in touch with Rob Ridland 027 753 0123 rob@riddlezinteractive.com for more details. Your support means the world!

Memberships are now due, so don’t forget to sign yourself, your kids, and your grandkids up for Junior Rugby. Simply click on the links below to join the club.

This week, we face our first pre-season hit-out against the Argentinians. They played their first game in Rotorua on Wednesday, securing three wins. Cole Brown, who’s touring with them, mentioned that all the games should be closely contested, as the Argentinians are fit and like to run.
