Lighting project update

Stage one "lighting up field number two" is complete, we have flicked the switch and these lights are great. They light up all of field two and half of field one. I am very happy with the result on field two and when we have the funds we will go for the same setup on field one and three.

We will now push on with Stage two, which is to finish the install of 4 new poles (already purchased) and control boxes for Field one. On top of the four new poles, we will be installing lights that we have sourced from the TRC which came from Yarrows Stadium. These lights are still in really good condition and will do a great job until we can afford Led lights for field one. All the work carried out with the poles and cables can be used for the new setup down the track.

Part of stage two is to under bore from the clubhouse to the 1st pole on all three fields so we have more control and even power to all lights. We have set the date 1 Feb 2022 to have this work complete. We are also talking with engineers regarding the location of the poles on field three, we are taking counsel on the bank on the side of the field and also what could be buried below the surface of field 3. Our first meeting with the Council will be to request the removal of some of the trees to make room for the new light poles and then analyse the subsurface of the ground.

We are fortunate that we have so many good people and companies involved with Tukapa, without them we would not be as far through our lighting project as we are to date.

Summer Touch Series

We are again running our social series from 27 October to 2 February for our Mixed Social touch and this year we have added a Rippa Rugby grade. See the link to the rules and link to enter your teams below:

NZ Forests Tukapa Bantams Under 85kg

WOW these games have been great to watch and have really shown some skills and great running rugby. Our Bantams are still alive in the National Under 85kg knock competition but this has turned into more of a Hunger Games now with Covid, and will be the last team standing or able to play. They have now removed the Auckland teams which means the Bantams are down to the final 5 teams by the weekend. Our game in Hamilton has moved one week to 16th October at this stage, still in Hamilton. I will keep you updated on Facebook if there are any more changes.

Keep an eye on the paper but here is our AGM notice for this year.

Rangi

Once we get to level one we have a memorial planned at Tukapa to celebrate the life of our Legend. As Rangi would have wanted, there will be a Hangi, a band and 440ml cans so be sure to keep an eye out once we hit level 1 (one day soon).

A massive thank you to the guys that have helped to clear out Rangi’s flat and other jobs while I am out of action with shoulder surgery. Cheers Fellas

Cleaner

We have again lost our cleaner to fulltime work so are on the look out for another one. It involves:

  • checking the clubhouse and toilets during the off season and cleaning what is need once a week (around 1 hour a week)
  • during season it needs to be cleaned though out once a week including toilets, full vacuum and mop, Kitchen and wipe all tables (6 hours a week)

Also from time to time there will be functions that we need to clean before and after them.

Coaches

At this stage, we are calling for the interest of coaches for our Division one team or Snr B’s as they are known. Ideally keen to pick from an ex Tukapa player or coach of Juniors but would like to hear from anyone that is keen, this job is voluntary but will be a stepping stone possibly leading to coaching our Premiers in coming years. Our Premiers work very closely with our Division one team so you will get a lot of support from the Premier coaching team. This role would suit an up-and-coming coach or someone who is keen to take the next step. If you are interested we can meet for a coffee and discuss.

Sponsor opportunity

We are in the process of ordering new jerseys for all our teams. This gives the opportunity for company logos to be placed on team gear for the next 3 years. The gear needs to be ordered in early November so if you are looking for a very visual sponsorship opportunity drop me a line or give me a call.

Chairpersons Update

Well, here we are the last week of the second round and we need a big turnout from our supporters to get our boys over the line. The Premiers need a win to lock in the home semi-final and our Div 1 boys need a bonus-point win to lock down a semi-final spot.
Our Colts and Div 2 boys want to finish their season with a win and move into the night's celebration at full strength.

If you can't make it to the game this weekend you can watch it live on the Tukapa facebook page: https://fb.me/e/1Xi9vUePk

You can also check out the game day programme on our website: https://www.tukapa.co.nz/programme/

End of Regular Season Party

Be sure to get a late pass because we are throwing a massive party to celebrate the end of the regular season. Get your budgie smugglers on and bikini out and join us for our Mid Winter Beach party.

Thanks to our Volunteers

Saturday I also want to celebrate our volunteers, they keep our club running from the Friday night bar crew to our Saturday field prep and everything in between. Our coaches and managers give up a lot of time and also come under the volunteer flag. So when you see a volunteer or management, shake their hand and say thank you.

The Lighting Project

This has been a project that has been on the books for Tukapa for at least 10 years and in the last 18 months, we have finally been able to get underway. The cables went in the ground before the season started to field 1 and 2 and there have been 6 new poles sitting at the Lifestyle Building workshop for the last 3 months. All. We are now just waiting for the lights to turn up from overseas.
All of the above would not have been possible without the good Tukapa fans who have come on board and helped us out with their services and expertise. From Tool Hire Taranaki lending trenches and diggers, Utility Scan GPS set out and marked the existing cables, Red Jacket the footing design, Ultimate Concrete supplying the reinforcing steel and we also have Line Power donating their skills and machinery to install the poles and lights when we are ready.
On top of all these sponsors, we have had a 40k grant from the TOI Foundation and a 20K grant from the Lion Foundation, and some long-time supporters of Tukapa also making donations to our project.
We are hoping to have all three fields ready before the start of the 2022 season but to make this happen we are still in need of more funds and services.
We anticipate this project will really change the way we see Rugby from kids being able to play mid-week games and free up Mum and Dad on the weekend to Friday night senior games. If you talk to any senior player they will tell you how hard it is to train in the current Non-lights.
Within Tukapa have a bunch of can-do people and this project to me is not too hard, but more of a, think outside the square and make it happen. Thank you to our sponsors and volunteers above for getting us this far and now let’s rally together and get it done.

Chairpersons Update

Queen’s Birthday and taking Tuesday off has made this an extremely short week so I'm running a bit late with the weekly update.

This week our Premiers, Div 1 and Colts all head to Tikorangi looking to help their case on the points table and move up a few spots.

Our Div 2 boys are off to Corbett Park to take on the mighty Kaitake in a game our fellas have been looking forward to all season. As I said on Saturday I grew up running the sand bucket and sleeping under bar leaners at Kaitake and now is probably the reason I love rugby so much. I still would love to see our boys get the win at the River mouth.

Last week I wrote about our Colts and there camaraderie, this week I have a similar moment that happened with our Div 1 boys. The team was really short at prop, Crighton put is hand up and said "I will give it a crack. I have never played prop but I can do it." The 3rd scrum of the day was a tight head and our Tukapa pack held their own for the whole 80 mins. Now our Premier coaches are saying maybe Crighton is a good player to develop into a solid Prop. It’s the can do attitude of our players and volunteers that make Tukapa stand out from the crowd and lead the way in club rugby. Its moments like these that other players from around Taranaki think to themselves there is something a little different at Tukapa in a good way.

We are away at Tikorangi this weekend and internet or cell coverage is not good so suggest you sort a car load and get out to watch the game because chances of a live stream could be slim and why not make the most of a sunny Saturday and watch some Rugby. At the same time our Div 1 and Colts play Clifton, they also have the women’s final on number 1 between Clifton and Southern which will be worth watching.

As most people know having a Tukapa women’s team is on our bucket list.

A couple of dates to look forward to in the near future:

Pomare’s 150th game 19th June against Inglewood

3rd July Netball/Rugby Mid-Winter Beach night with mechanical surf board

Chairpersons Update

Oh how the tables can change after a wet day of rugby in Stratford last Saturday. With our loss in the Premier game to Stratford/Eltham this now sees us sitting in third place on 19 points with Inglewood and NPOB equal on top on 21 points, meaning a win over Old Boys this week will help our case.

In the Colts grade, I watched all 80 mins of the game against Stratford/Elham and was impressed with our never-give-up attitude and also the team spirit that was shown by our boys. A young man called Connor who is new to rugby came on to the field with 15 mins to go and the way our boys cheered him onto the field and supported him when he made a tackle and carried well, it was just awesome and made me proud to call myself the Chairman of the Tukapa Rugby Club. It's moments like these that make our club different from any other club and why I love doing what I do. So thank you to the Colts for being good buggers. It doesn’t matter win or lose we are brothers for life.

With our Div 1 and Div 2 teams both missing out in the weekend by 1 point they will be putting the extra work in this weekend to try and get the win. Our Div 1 boys are at home to NPOB who are top of the table but we sit only 2 points out of the top 4 and a win could see us break inside to a semi-final spot. The Div 2 boys get on the bus again and head down to Rahotu to play a very good Div2 team on their Jubilee weekend. We wish them luck and hope they get a win. They have put in extra work at Ash’s bar so they are well prepared going into the trip.

This last Saturday we had a very quiet night over the bar so are going to ramp things up after the NPOB game with Nathan back on the Guitar and he will be set upstairs to keep the younger crowd entertained while the after game breakdown can go on downstairs. Be sure to hang around and join in the fun at the club house. Paul will be doing meals in the upstairs kitchen and Monday is a holiday anyway.
